Americus

Americus was founded in 1832 and most likely named after the mapmaker Amerigo Vespucci.  During the Civil War, Americus cared for wounded Confederate soldiers in three hospitals. Americus was one of the first cities in Georgia to begin using electric street cars and, at one point, was the eighth largest city in Georgia.  When you visit Americus you can see the beautiful Victorian commercial architecture popular in the 1880's and relish in their southern hospitality.
