Atlanta

The City of Atlanta
Atlanta, the capital of Georgia, was founded in 1837. During the Civil War, it was attacked and largely destroyed by General Sherman in the Battle of Atlanta. 10,000 people died and only about 400 out of 4,000 buildings remained standing. However, even after all this destruction, Atlanta attracted many railroads and became a major reconstruction center for the South. It was named the capital of Georgia in 1868. In 1929, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., one of the most famous civil rights activists, was born in Atlanta. Today, Atlanta is a city with more than 400,000 people and it is a major economic center of our nation.
