Augusta

Augusta, located in Eastern Georgia, was established by James Oglethorpe in 1735. He named the town Augusta in honor of the Princess Augusta of Wales. After a road was built in 1739 to connect Savannah with Augusta, the little town began to grow. Over the years, Augusta became a leader in the production of textiles, gunpowder and paper. In 1845, a railroad was built linking Augusta to the Mississippi River, and by 1860, Augusta was the second largest city in Georgia. The Civil War was difficult for Augusta with refugees seeking haven there and Sherman's March to the Sea. However, life after the war was very prosperous. By the beginning of the 20th century, Augusta had one of the largest inland cotton markets in the world. Today, Augusta is a beautiful town to visit with many attractions to see.
