Dalton

Dalton was originally called Cross Plains, however, in 1847 the named was changed to Dalton and a railroad was completed through the city.  After the Civil War, a railroad line to Rome would be added, making Dalton a huge center for railroad activity.  Later, at the beginning of the 20th century, Catherine Evans Whitener began making bedspreads and the orders begin pouring in so fast she had to hire some more people. She decided to start her own company, The Evans Manufacturing Company. This company began to produce carpet in a similar way they produced the bedspreads. That is why today, Dalton is unrivaled in its production of carpet and why ninety percent of the carpet produced in the world today is made in a twenty-five mile radius of Dalton.
