Decatur

Decatur, located north-east of Atlanta, was founded in 1823 at the intersection of two Native American trails. The town was named after the naval hero Stephen Decatur. The city grew slowly over the years because there was no train leading to it. During the Civil War, Decatur became a strategic site in Sherman's campaign against Atlanta. Decatur was occupied in July 1864 by the Union in an attempt to cut off the Confederate's supply lines. However, during the Battle of Atlanta, the Confederacy attacked the Union troops, and they were forced to leave Decatur in order to defend other areas. In 1996, Decatur had some major renovation in preparation for the Summer Olympics held in Atlanta. Today, Decatur is a beautiful, community town that the whole family will enjoy.
