Gainesville

Gainesville , located in northeastern Georgia, was charted in 1821.  In 1828, a gold rush in Dahlonega, which is near Gainesville, brought great business boom to the area.  During the Civil War, Gainesville was spared any major damage and by the start of the twentieth century, Gainesville was a popular resort town. In the late 1930's, a local entrepreneur, Jesse Jewell, began to raise poultry, process it and the distribute it.  By the beginning of World War II, poultry replaced the cotton industry, and, by the war's end, Gainesville was known as the "Poultry Capital of the World."  In 1953, Lake Lanier was created by building a dam on the Chattahoochee River which was a hugely popular recreational site.  Today, Gainesville thrives as a medical, judicial, and financial hub for northeast Georgia.
