Helen
Helen, located in north Georgia, was first inhabited by the Moundbuilders. After 1450, the Moundbuilders had left and Cherokee Indians settled in Helen Valley. However, during the American Revolution, their village was burned down and by 1819, the Cherokee Indians were forced to move. In 1828, gold was discovered in the nearby town of Loudsville attracting many people to the region. In 1910, a railroad was built to transport the wood that the local lumber company took from the Blue Ridge Mountains. It was at this time that Helen was officially created. In 1931, the wood mill closes due to the Great Depression and the federal government decided to make the land, stripped away by the lumber companies, into the Chattahoochee National Forest. Helen began to see the benefits of the forest almost

immediately and in 1968, city planners met together to figure out how they could attract more people to Helen. John Kollack came up with the idea of remodeling the town and making it into a Bavarian village. The idea was brilliant and by 1972, thousands of tourists were pouring into Helen.
