Jekyll Island

Jekyll Island, located on Georgia's coastline, was purchased from John Eugene duBignon in 1886 for $125,000 by some of the wealthiest men in America including: J.P. Morgan, Joseph Pulitzer, William Rockefeller, Cornelius Vanderbilt, and four others. They wanted to make the prized, isolated island into a hunting resort.  They built a Clubhouse on the island in 1887 and in 1896, they added the Sans Souci Condominiums. The owners also built "cottages" (or mansions) for themselves along the island coastline.  The Clubhouse added a golf course, a marina, swimming pools, tennis courts, and much more throughout its booming period.  However, in the onset of the Great Depression, the members of the club stopped coming to Jekyll Island and instead went to Europe for vacation.  Then in 1942, the U. S. government requested that the island not be used for the rest of WWII due to safety concerns of the owners.  In 1947, the island was sold to the State of Georgia and, in 1978, the club district was designated a National Historic Landmark.  In 1985, restoration of Clubhouse, Annex, and the Sans Souci began.  Today, the Jekyll Island Club Hotel is now available for everyone to enjoy.  You can visit the restored "cottages" of the owners in Millionaire's Village and see what attracted those wealthy people so many years ago.
