Macon
Macon, located southeast of Atlanta, was first settled by Moundbuilders and the Hitchiti and later by the Creek Indians. In the 1680's English traders founded Macon and opened a post there. In 1822 Bibb County was created and in 1823, Macon was formed. It was named in honor of Nathaniel Macon, an anti-Federalist North Carolinian who served as Speaker of the House, president pro-tem of the Senate and made unsuccessful attempt at the vice-presidency in 1824. In 1845, the Central Railroad completed a line from Savannah to Macon, linking Macon's agricultural economy to the coastal ports for shipping. During the Civil War, Macon was a hospital for Confederate soldiers, a prison for Union soldiers and a manufacturing center for Confederate weapons. During the 1950's Macon attracted amazing musical talent, such as, Leana Horne, Otis Redding, James Brown, "Little Richard" Penniman, and, slightly later, the Allman Brothers. That is why today the Georgia Music Hall of Fame is located in Macon. In 1994, Alberto, the first hurricane of the season, hit Macon and flooded the banks of the Ocmulgee River. More than 160,000 people went for up to 19 days without treated water. However, today, despite all the damage, Macon is a thriving community that can't be missed on a trip to Georgia.
