Marietta

Marietta, located in northwest Georgia, was first settled by Cherokee Indians, in 1834, after they had won the lands lottery. The location of Marietta quickly attracted a seasonal population of farmers. During the Civil War, as General Sherman was pushing back his troops to nearby Atlanta, a battle occurred between the Union and Confederate soldiers just beyond the Marietta boundaries in what is presently called Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park. Two cemeteries are left over from this battle, one for the Union troops and one for the Confederate troops. Today, when you visit Marietta, you can see the old Southern houses, have a picnic at the Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park, or go rafting down the Chattahoochee.
