Pine Mountain

Pine Mountain, located southwest of Atlanta and at the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, began in 1882. This quaint town was originally called Chipley, and it came into being after the railroad spread from Columbus to Pine Mountain. It started off as an agricultural community; however, it shortly blossomed into a booming tourist attraction due, in part, to Cason Callaway’s efforts. In 1952, he opened Callaway Gardens, a 14,000 acre park with beautiful floral displays, fishing lakes, golfing, hiking, and much more. Today, the park is still open along with a variety of other attractions, including the Franklin D. Roosevelt State Park, the small shops in downtown Pine Mountain, and lots of recreational activities.
