Saint Simons Island

The first inhabitants of St. Simons Island were the Creek Indians.  In 1540, Spain claimed the island and built missions in attempts to convert the Indians to Christianity.  In the late 1600's, Britain took control of Georgia and in the early 1700's, General James Oglethorpe was given Georgia and told to create a buffer between the Spanish in Florida and the British in South Carolina.  Oglethorpe built Fort Frederica and Fort St. Simons and in 1739, Britain declared war on Spain.  Spain attacked St. Simons Island; however, the British won the battle and claimed all of Georgia.  St. Simons Island's fort was used in the Revolutionary War and the Civil War.  By the early 1900's, people discovered the island as a great summer destination. Today, St. Simons Island still has summer homes and is still a destination for summer travelers.
