Valdosta
Valdosta, located in southern Georgia, was orginally called Troupville. In 1837, it was declared the county seat of Lowndes County.  When the Gulf and Atlantic Railroad decided to bring the railroad four miles south of the town of Troupville, the citizens chose to move the town down near the railroad.  Once near a railroad, they were guaranteed the prosperity of their town in the future.  They renamed Troupville to Valdosta after the plantation home "Val d'Aosta" of the former Governor George Troup.  Valdosta grew tremendously between 1890-1920.  Many of the historic homes you can see today were built at this time.  Today, The Valdosta Heritage Foundation has restored many of the old southern mansions back to their original beauty so everyone can see.
